About Réserve Naturelle des Gorges de l'Ardèche

The Réserve Naturelle des Gorges de l'Ardèche is a protected natural area located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of southern France. It encompasses around 1,500 hectares of the rugged Ardèche River canyon, spanning approximately 30 kilometers between the towns of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche. The reserve features a deep gorge carved through Jurassic limestone, with towering cliffs reaching up to 300 meters high, showcasing remarkable karst formations like natural arches and caves including the iconic Pont d'Arc natural bridge. Ecologically, the reserve hosts a diverse mix of Mediterranean and alpine flora, supporting species such as lavender, boxwood, and rare orchids, while the fauna includes birds of prey, bats, otters, and several amphibians. Historically, the area has been valued since prehistoric times, with the nearby Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave containing some of the oldest known cave paintings in the world. Visitors are attracted by the wide range of recreational opportunities: hiking the well-marked trails along the ridge tops and riverbanks, canoeing or kayaking the Ardèche River through the gorge’s dramatic scenery, rock climbing on vertical cliff faces, and wildlife watching. The natural beauty combined with its accessibility makes the reserve a popular destination for nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers. Strict conservation measures protect the sensitive landscape and biodiversity while allowing sustainable tourism. The balance between preserving this remarkable natural heritage and welcoming visitors is central to the management of the reserve.
